Who are we?
We are a local charity serving the older people of the Barnsley area. Our staff team is supported by a wonderful group of around 140 volunteers who help us in many different ways. Our services range from Day Care to a free information and advice service to a Men in Sheds project. We also have workers on the ground in various parts of Barnsley working to combat social isolation for older people.
- We want to provide opportunities for isolated older people to come together across Barnsley and also to make them feel valued and welcomed as part of the community. In order to do this we are planning the following:
- Pop-up Friendship cafes in a number of locations across Barnsley in conjunction with local cafe owners. We aim to have specific times and dates set up where we will have an Age UK Barnsley presence, offering advice, information and support.
- Christmas Lunch we are planning a free Christmas lunch for over 55s who will otherwise be on their own this Christmas.
- Christmas Eve Drop-in an open opportunity for older people to gather together for tea, coffee and mince pies.
How will we use the money raised?
Your kind donations will go directly towards the cost of these events. Your money will be spent on the older people of Barnsley.
Why support this project?
Social isolation and loneliness are major issues for older people in the Barnsley area and winter can heighten the problems. By taking steps around the Christmas period to make a difference and then looking to build on the relationships made going forward your support can make a real and lasting difference.
