Chris is a 17-year-old orphan who lives in Kampala in Uganda. He dreams of supporting his 2 young siblings by openning a hairdresser salon.
This past summer I volunteered at an orphanage on the island of Bussi in Uganda. The orphanage provides the children with a roof over their head, food and an education - something which is not to be taken for granted in Uganda.
During my stay there I got to know Chris, a charming 17 year-old boy, who told me his heartbreaking story of how both his parents passed away from an illness and he and his two young siblings were left on their own. He was sent to the orphanage, and his siblings were taken in by a friend of their late mother.
When I returned home, I kept in touch with some of the kids from the orphanage and, about a month after my return, Chris contacted me and told me his step-mother (this is what he and his siblings call the woman who took them in), can no longer afford to send his siblings to school. Chris then had to leave the orphanage without graduating from school, so he can go and help her. He tried to find a job, but the job market in Uganda is poor and finding a job is nearly impossible.
With nowhere else to turn, he contacted me and asked for help raising money to start a business for his family. Chris wants to open a beauty salon to support his family, as well as provide employment for several of the locals in his home town.
Any donation, however small, will be greatly appreciated and will get Chris a step closer to his simple dream of supporting his family with dignity.
