The biggest problem Hindus in Essex face is lack of a Hindu community centre and a place of worship. Chelmsford is a very central place that is easily accessible.
We are working towards having a community centre for the advancement of Hindu Religion. It may provide a temple for religious activities and facilities to incorporate religious as well as cultural functions.
Due to schools and their changing policy and also since Chelmsford has become a city, a large number of Hindus are moving in the area.
From 2011 census record, it was noted that Hindu + Sikh population in Chelmsford is 0.8% 11,144. It has been estimated that in the past 5 years, Hindu influx in Chelmsford has increased immensely and by 2021 census, Indians will be the second largest population in and around Chelmsford.
How does it help?
A community centre helps community to strengthen its traditions and gives it a chance to exchange cultures. It’s a place to experience and learn meditation, yoga, spirituality, to teach our children about our values and practices, and to be at peace. A place to celebrate traditions and culture. Knowing each other’s culture brings better cohesion by accepting our diverse background. It gives confidence to the community members hence providing for better mental health
Lack of temple deprives us not only of a regular place of worship & meditation but also causes hardship during life events:
o Prayer Meeting, upon death in family
o Renewal of Vows etc.
Absence of a temple translates into people having to travel far for these rituals during the above life events.
