We are Colin and Marisa, we have 2 children and we live in Chard, we love living here the community is amazing and the town is full of history.

Like most people we are very much aware of the plastic and wastage epidemic, beaches that once were picture perfect are now full of trash, the oceans have islands of floating rubbish/plastic, we have all seen Blue Planet and the posts on social media of animals across the world from fish to hedgehogs are being affected and killed by this epidemic.

Plastic has never been fantastic, non degradable packaging is everywhere, the big retailers don't seem to care they are producing tons of waste our planet and the consumers are the ones paying for it.

So we started talking why so much packaging and how great would it be to have one of those general wholesale grocery stores that stock every day staples, all sort of goodies and food wouldn't have to be wrapped in plastic and in the long term that would save money and reduce waste in households.

Just to give you an idea, per year in the UK alone we produce 31 million tonnes of food waste, whilst there's approximately 8.2 million people going hungry. And an estimate of 8 million tons of plastic ends up in our oceans each year on top of that other pollutants like pesticides also end up in our oceans. It is alarming figures and we want to be part of the change.

So after a lot of research we came across an old idea, with a new approach, a wave of stores opening all over the country, the Zero Waste shops, this movement has gained momentum in the last few years, immediately we felt that we needed something like this in Chard and that is how Chard Eco Deli was born.

With your support we will be able to get a shop and set it up with the appropriate equipment like dispensers, scales, jars, shelves and two grind your own nut butter machines.

We want to fill our store with products like nuts, flours, pasta, dried fruits, oils, spices, snacks, pulses and cereals (to name a few) we are also planning to have bulk cleaning and laundry products, sustainable bamboo toothbrushes intimate hygiene products( like moon cups )and Zero waste cruelty free beauty products. Stock fresh fruit and veg, free from plastic packaging from local suppliers and homemade cakes (baked by Marisa).

We are planning to add workshops for children and adults alike and in the summer make our own dairy free ice cream.Hopefully add a community larder to help reduce food waste and help people in poverty.

There are lots of things that we want to do in our shop to serve our thriving community and we need your help to do it.

After looking at loans we soon realised that it would be difficult for a working family with average wages, no assets and no home ownership to get a loan and build a sustainable business, we are turning to crowdfunding so we can turn this amazing shop from an idea into a reality.

We believe this can really work and make a difference in our community and in the way people shop.

All we need now is your support, you as a consumer that believes in a better more eco friendly and sustainable way of shopping.

Thank you so much for supporting a shop that wont cost the earth.

Much love,

Marisa, Colin, William and Oliver.
