Chagford CC new net facility

Chagford CC new net facility

We did it
On 23rd April 2021 we successfully raised £7,565 ( + est. £843.75 Gift Aid ) with 58 supporters in 28 days

The aim of this project is to raise funds for a new net facility at Chagford CC to allow the club to continue to build and develop.

New stretch target

The extra money will allow us to add additional safety features to the net specifications, including white sheet net blinkers to avoid distractions and increase viability for users.

Chagford Cricket Club was formed in 1895, and ever since it has been an important aspect of both local and surrounding communities. Having always had its home at the foot of Meldon Hill, the ground was significantly redeveloped in the late 1980s alongside The Recreational Trust and Chagford Football Club creating a multifunctional community facility.

Senior Teams

Chagford Cricket Club has seen several exciting developments since 2019, including promotion from division F to E, which we are excited to continue to pursue this season. Whilst the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult, in the brief easing of restrictions last summer, we were able to successfully field a second team who have since also been entered into the Devon Cricket League for the coming 2021 season. As well as now having two Saturday teams, we also run a midweek T20 team with a focus on local friendly matches, with a BBQ and drinks hosted for friends, family, and the local community to enjoy.

Junior Cricket

Chagford Cricket Club has a thriving youth section, with an incredible 100+ children and young people regularly joining on a Friday to have fun, be active, socialise, and learn new skills in their cricketing development. Due to the enthusiasm of our junior section we have a variety of teams entered into the South Devon Youth League including a boys, mixed, and girls team. Additionally, there is even an opportunity for under 5s to start their cricketing careers, with Chagford also hosting All Stars and Dynamos Clubs.

As part of our commitment to our Youth section, we send trained coaches into four local primary schools at no charge, and set up U11's and U9's school competitions, to promote participation and encourage more get more children and young people to get involved in Friday evenings. Through our two Saturday teams and midweek team, we actively promote juniors playing senior cricket to aid their skill and development.

Women's Cricket

A new addition to our club, Chagford women's team was first set up in 2019, originally under the English Cricket Board's 'Wine & Wickets' scheme, which proved to be a huge success! The team has become a regular Friday night feature and continues to go from strength to strength, now entering local tournaments.

Walking Cricket

In partnership with U3A we are piloting 'Walking Cricket'. This is a scheme aimed at over 55's and gives people the opportunity to keep active whilst continuing to participate in a much loved sport or trying something new. This is another step Chagford CC are taking to become a hub of activity for all of the community.

The Nets and Artificial Wicket

With an increase in interest in outdoor activity and practicing cricket throughout the pandemic in 2020, it became more apparent than ever that the current cricket nets and artificial wicket, installed in the 1980s, are not fit for purpose and in a sorry state of disrepair. Due to their location at the ground, one lane of the nets is completely unusable due to tree roots, with the other two torn and frayed, which cause a safety hazard, and limits their use further. After making do for a number of years and exhausting the lifespan of the current nets, repair skills of the squad and local community, and Gorilla Glue (!), this is no longer an option and a new facility is needed for the benefits of current members, potential new players, and the youth section. Having a new nets facility will not only enable the current players and youth section to develop, but will also serve to attract new players, provide opportunities for coaching, and encourage more people to get involved with cricket. The specification of this project provides ECB accredited nets, with increased safety features to ensure users feel safe to take part and to practice, and utilise modern technology to provide a pitch-like experience for players. The same surface will also be installed onto the artificial wicket, allowing for an increased range of coaching for all members.

The impact of Covid-19

The covid-19 pandemic has had a significant negative impact on many sports clubs, halting the ability to fundraise and generate income from players. Due to Covid-19, we have lost an estimated 50% membership income as well as our ability to host our fundraising events, effectively leaving the pot empty.

New nets to improve the cricket provision and training facility had been in the pipeline but we have now reached the point where we are not able to delay another 12 months - the current nets and artificial wicket on the square are in poor condition in desperate need of replacement, with patch repairs no longer being suitable. The new facility will allow the cricket club to grow in the junior and senior section, and will mean we can sustain the level of cricket currently played.

Your Help

As we begin to see light at the end of the pandemic tunnel, we realise everyone has experienced tremendous difficulties and uncertainties over the last 12 months. As a club we are determined to continue to grow and become a club of which our supportive Chagford community can be proud.

In order to move forwards with the net project, we are hoping to raise £7500, which with funds we have already raised would enable us to get this project going. We are always grateful for the support given from the community, but with the past year in mind we are even more grateful and appreciative for any donations, no matter their size, and the continued support of anyone who can help us reach our target and achieve our ambitions. We look forward to welcoming you to the club on Wednesday evenings and Saturdays throughout the season, for some great cricket, a stunning back drop, and maybe even a drink and a bite to eat.
