We are Intergenerational Music Making and have just launched our nationwide initiative 'Care to Create' - It is so important, now more than ever, that communities remain strong and positive and that we do what we can to help those in need. We are calling for all creatives to step forward and spread light, love and creativity to all those around you!
Across the world we are being told that 'social distancing' is vital in order to protect the vulnerable but, loneliness is powerful and can have a huge impact on our mental health and wellbeing. At IMM, we are determined to keep relationships strong between communities and generations and to tackle feelings of loneliness and isolation through The Arts!
Research from the Big Lunch shows that there are 36 million people that feel distant from their neighbours. Reviewing this alongside the need for self isolation, loneliness and the closing down of care homes to visitors and activities there is a serious risk in an increase in mental health conditions and depression amongst the older generation.
The speed in which Covid-19 is developing impacts the gap in our community connections and we need to take action to close this gap! We believe it is vital for communication between communities to remain strong and positive and for people to find some light in this chaotic time.
"Care to Create" is a UK wide initiative grown out of Intergenerational Music Makings community projects that have an outreach of over 6,000 people each year. IMM are calling for everyone to take action in tackling loneliness through The Arts. We are asking that children, young people and families spend time creating postcards, art work, poetry, stories, playlists to send to your local care home or elderly neighbour. We want to spread love and care throughout communities and find ways to help those in need cope a little easier.
Since the outbreak, like many of us we have been unable to offer our clients the artistic, intergenerational interventions many of them rely on. Therefore, we felt it was vital to approach the pandemic imaginatively and creatively. Social isolation and loneliness are nothing new to IMM and, now more than ever, we believe the arts have the transformative power to bring people together in ways we could not have foreseen.
We have just launched out Care to Create online platform full of artistic, musicals and physical intervention to help improve the wellbeing and mental health of all generations. We are offering music therapy sessions, 1:1 support and phone buddy referrals to encourage connection and positive communication.
We have attached a toolkit full of creative ideas you can do with your friends, family and at school! There is also a 'I Care to Create' story card for you to share all your wonderful ideas with everyone! We want to hear all about your caring creations it so please do post pictures to @IMMCaretoCreate and use tag #CaretoCreate
