"When it gets to a certain time in the afternoon you look forward to hearing the phone ring. It's so good to know that you are going to have a chat with someone. It cheers you up." - Careline Member
Careline is a small charity offering a lifeline to members of the local community who suffer from loneliness or who are isolated and feel disconnected from society. We provide a free telephone befriending service to over 100 people living in the Derbyshire Dales and East Staffordshire. Calls are available every day of the year including Bank Holidays and throughout the Christmas and New Year period.
Loneliness and isolation are never more pronounced than at Christmas time. 6-13% of people over 65 yrs of age report "feeling lonely all or most of the time". According to research from Age UK, one million of those people will actually be alone during the Christmas period, having little or no contact with anyone and rely on the TV as their only company.
Christmas, a time for family and celebration just magnifies those feelings of loneliness. A telephone befriending call is a simple but effective way of showing those suffering from loneliness that someone cares. For some, it's the only opportunity they have to connect with their community and can, therefore, help to alleviate feelings of isolation and loneliness and make them feel a part of something.
"Your calls give me confidence. Thank you with all my heart." - Careline Member
Careline makes telephone befriending calls 365 days a year at a cost of £450 per person. A telephone call allows for a service such as this to reach a larger number of people, over a larger geographical area, over a shorter period of time. Our members tell us every day what a lifeline their Careline calls are to them and they see it as a vital service. Please help by donating today to ensure that we can continue making these calls, particularly now, at Christmas time and right throughout the year. Any amount is gratefully received, however small.
Our service offers befriending, friendship, support and signposting onto other support services. We also offer our members the opportunity to get out of the home at various events throughout the year, such as monthly coffee mornings; which means that members are able to meet with some of the volunteers who call them and the wider community.
Please help us to maintain this lifeline at Christmas
