What's 'Care Free' About?
The frightening state of the UK’s elderly care system is becoming an increasingly worrying issue. Cuts to the councils funding has left ‘an estimated 1.2 million over-65s going without help for care - nearly one in eight of all older people’. The recent uproar surrounding Chancellor, Philip Hammond’s, failure to ‘earmark any of the additional £23 billion for infrastructure on social care at his first Autumn Statement in the Commons’ has convinced the public that the council’s strain to provide support to the elderly will continue.
‘Nearly half of social care services visited by inspectors in the past year were found to be failing‘. In the past five years, local authority spending on care for older and disabled people has fallen by11% in real terms’. ‘In 2010 there were 370,000 older people in private sector nursing and residential homes and only 22,000 in homes run by local authorities, compared to the situation 20 years ago when there were 240,000 older people in private sector homes and 114,000 in local authority homes’. ‘The BBC identified 11 councils that rejected more than 75% of applications’.
The UK is not the country to get old in anymore...
Care Free is a dark comedy but despite it’s fictionality, it aims to discuss the real life issues of care in the private sector, using a daring levity in the realms of the horror genre. The film offers an extreme and darkly comedic suggestion of what may happen when the elderly’s patience with the incompetent care system eventually runs thin.
‘Kiera, a new recruit to a care agency with a floundering reputation, is sent to look after an old couple called the Connelly’s. The seemingly straightforward assignment takes a grisly turn into a living nightmare.’
