Why this cannon?
The cannon would be a great asset to the National Civil War Centre - Newark Museum as there are currently no 17th century or replica cannon in the collection. It will be displayed in a prominent position in the museum attracting visitors from far and wide.
The cannon is an replica of a British Civil Wars draked minion (3lb) cannon. Currently it is owned by the Marquess of Winchester's regiment of the English Civil War Society. The original cannon, from which the barrel was copied, is currently housed at Boston Guildhall and was cast by the first King's Gunfounder, John Browne.
Cannon of this type were known to have been used in and around Newark and in many other parts of Britain during the British Civil Wars. Cannon balls of this size, which are only fired by this type of cannon, have been found in the river Trent close to Newark. It would be great to have this replica cannon in a place where visitors to, and residents of, Newark can see it.
What is a “draked minion” cannon?
A “draked” cannon refers to a cannon with a shortened barrel. This design results in a lighter and more easily manoeuverable piece of field artillery. The word “minion” originates from the French word (mignon) meaning “cute”, again referring to the size of the cannon. The draked minion cannon required only one small pony or welsh cob to drag it onto the battlefield. This type of cannon was used by both Royalists and Parliamentarians during the British Civil Wars.
The cannon may be small, but it is capable of firing a 3lb (1.4kg) cannon ball at a speed of over 1200 feet per second (366 metres per second) up to a distance of 1300 yards (1.2km) and required 3.5lb (1.6kg ) of black powder and a crew of six men to fire it.
The cannon comes complete with a historically accurate carriage and a complete set of tools including ram rod, worm, half moon and two mops.
Everyone who donates £10 or more gets an entry into a draw to win a chance to fire the cannon.
