A new associate artist scheme for theatre makers from underrepresented backgrounds to make their theatrical ambitions a reality.

CPT is a central London studio theatre dedicated to supporting emerging artists making contemporary theatre about the issues that matter to people right now. We stage more than 450+ performances a year at our home in West Euston, and work closely with artists at the start of their career to help them realise their ambitions. Over the years we’ve supported amazing artists like Chris Goode, Scottee, Beats and Elements, Sh!t Theatre, Milk Presents, Highrise, Barrel Organ, Jamal Harewood and many more.

In 2018, we plan to extend our associate artist scheme, with a new programme specifically working with artists from underrepresented backgrounds, and we need YOUR HELP to make it happen. Go on. IT’S CHRISTMAS!

What’s the scheme?

We want to support three theatre companies – and maybe more – from underrepresented backgrounds through our associate artist scheme in 2018.

By underrepresented backgrounds we mean those from groups we currently don’t see and hear enough of on British stages: that might be in terms of ethnicity, disability, socioeconomic background or gender identity.

This can’t happen without you. Your generous support will be vital in enabling us to support each artist or company with:

  • A £2000 commission to enable them to develop their projects
  • Access to at least one week’s free rehearsal space
  • Dramaturgical, marketing and fundraising support to make their projects as successful as possible
  • Business mentoring to lay the groundwork for their long-term future in the sector
  • Free tickets to see shows at CPT and learn from the work of other artists

We need £10,000 to support three associate artist companies. Any additional money raised will enable us to support even more great artists through the scheme.

Why is it important?

We believe that the voices heard and the stories told on British stages should be reflective of the make-up of the UK. Right now, that’s not happening. We know, for example, that 93% of the creative and cultural workforce is white, and that only 10% of actors come from working class backgrounds. But opportunities like this can begin to redress the balance – by offering crucial support to artists from underrepresented backgrounds to get their work on to the stage.

CPT is a stepping stone – the place many artists have their first professional experience of presenting theatre, so by empowering emerging artists from underrepresented backgrounds, we’re not just increasing the diversity of the work on our own stages, but we’ll also be contributing to a much more diverse theatre sector in years to come.

What’s in it for me?

Besides the warm fuzzy glow you’ll get from supporting the next generation of brilliant theatre makers, and contributing to a theatre sector that’s a much more inclusive place – we’ve got a range of exciting, and distinctively CPT flavoured, rewards! Sign up to support us and you could receive free tickets to come and see a performance by an associate artist your money has helped; a personalised postcard updating you on their progress for the scheme; or even a slap up meal with one of the artists you’ve supported and a member of the CPT team at one of Drummond’s famous curry houses, followed by a night at a CPT show.

Sponsor an artist for £75 or more by 13th December and we’ll send a bonus sparkle filled, personalised card to you or a recipient of your choice, in addition to the rewards listed, thanking you or them for ‘sponsoring an artist’ this Christmas.

Thank you so much for reading this, and for your support – it really does make the world of difference. Please tell your friends and family about this too, and share on your social media channels – the further this travels, the great impact we can make.
