The A390 is one of Cornwall’s major tourist routes and By-the-way tours is building a phone app to coax more drivers off the highway for a local visit.
Lostwithiel's prosperity depends significantly upon its tourist trade and yet sometimes the town is 'driven through' rather than 'driven to'. Given the proud history, beautiful surroundings and wonderful festivities on offer, these drive-by drivers are missing out!
Enjoyed largely from the comfort of their car, occupants will be treated to an audio tour (via their car stereo) with wide appeal. Good storytelling will be a priority and the route has been carefully selected to showcase the town’s wider charms. Using GPS, the app locates a series of 'audio pools' based on the events during the 1644 Siege of Lostwithiel. Placed on the A390 as you approach the town and also on minor local roads, the pools are situated as close as possible to where historical events actually took place. Local actors will deliver this story from the perspective of two C 17th century characters with a little ‘horrible history’ added in for good measure - listen here to an example clip.
The app will be free to download and en route drivers will be encouraged to pull over and explore our 'on-screen advertising' for local food /drink, attractions, quality local produce and accommodation. At its conclusion they will be directed in to the town for a visit.
The historical re-enactment charity 'Sealed knot' have already agreed to invest in this pitch and have been consulted regarding our content. Click on this link to hear BBC radio Cornwall's feature on the app presented in 2019.
Once funded, we will be able to add on screen advertisements for local businesses and promote the app to visitors via existing tourist attractions and websites - including Visit Cornwall. Equally we hope local people and businesses will promote the app in holiday lets, pubs, restaurants, shops, hotels and on social media. We will also be pushing for further coverage on local media.
25% of our pitch sum will go towards the YHA90 fund which will provide well deserved short breaks for key workers and vulnerable young people when the Covid restrictions are lifted.
To reduce our carbon footprint, It is our longer term aim to support the establishment of new electric car charging stations in our tour locations.
However, please be aware like all Crowdfunder pitches, should we fail to reach our funding target by the date specified above, all monies pledged would be returned to your bank accounts (minus a small charge to cover the Crowdfunder administration). From your point of view, there really is virtually nothing to lose!
The project is a home grown initiative supported by the Lostwithiel Business Group. Lostwithiel Museum Association already offer local history tours on foot and our app would point users directly their way. It is led by a Lostwithiel resident with previous experience in creating GPS phone apps.
So, if this pitch has done it's job, you'll have been persuaded that it's worth your investment. You can either just invest an amount of your choosing or select one of the rewards as you wish.
Let’s get this ball rolling!
