With The Drill Hall, The Usher Gallery, and The Jolly Brewer Pub all currently under threat, NOW is the time to take action. Lincoln has a thriving and varied Arts Community that sits under the Radar of the Council, that goes largely under-valued and ignored. Students graduate and leave. Talented creatives pack their bags. There is very little support or funding available to those creatives working and living in this City. We are more than a Castle. We are more than a Cathedral. We are the future of Lincoln as a Cultural and Creative UK hub. It's time to breathe some life and colour into this City. LET'S MAKE CHANGE FOR OURSELVES. Never mind the Council. Never mind petitions. We need cash. We need a venue.
I am writing this in the hopes that it will build awareness, but unfortunately I do not have much hope that we can achieve anything like the target. If by some miracle we do (I can't even begin to imagine the celebration!) I propose that we look to:
Buy The Jolly Brewer Pub on Broadgate.
Continue to run it as a public house.
Turn the upstairs accomodation into 5 Artists Studios with communal room and Kitchen
Put a regular schedule of events such as Live Music, Comedy, Poetry, Scratch Night, Philosophy Nights, Poetry Nights etc.
We'd continue the tradition of the open mic nights, and gallery space. And preserve the interior (whilst doing a few minor updates)
We'd hold regular Arts festivals and make use of the glorious beer garden.
Offer practice space to artists, including the use of PA equipment
Stock (where possible) locally produced beverages and food
If we are unable to buy the Brewer, we would look for another space where we could achieve a similar set-up.
Something needs to change. We cannot keep losing these vital spaces.
Even if you can just chuck a £ in, with enough support we may attract larger donators. Anyone who can help with the legal structure of such a project please contact me.
Let's get loud, let's make our voices heard, let's try and save what's left of Culture in this wonderful City!
If we don't raise enough?
The money will be allocated to local arts Projects across the City.
Who am I?
I am a Performance Poet, an Events Organiser, and the Creative Director of Women in the Arts. The Jolly Brewer pub is where I took my first steps as a performer, and I know many others who started out there. The Jolly Brewer is a vital space in the growth and development of the arts and it NEEDS TO STAY!
PLEASE SHARE THIS AND MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD!
