Who are we?
Ceruleo are a Baroque chamber ensemble that create unique narrative programmes by interweaving music and words. Communication and collaboration are at the heart of everything we do and with Burying the Dead we want to bring to life a project that is bigger and better than anything we've done before.
What is Burying the Dead?
Henry Purcell is on his deathbed, tormented by half-dreams and memories from his childhood - including the unending terror of being caught up in the Great Fire of London.
More than a concert, with Burying the Dead, Ceruleo want to bring Restoration London to life with a new script by Clare Norburn. The piece will occupy the borders between a play and a concert as Purcell (played by actor Gerald Kyd) gives us his deathbed testimony. Purcell will conjure up the two singers and musicians of Ceruleo to his bedside. Together they will take the audience on a journey back through Purcell’s memories of theatrical intrigues and into his internal dreamworld, as he confronts imagined key childhood memories of 1666.
Burying the Dead is an invented story, linking the Great Fire of London and Purcell’s music.
And what is the plan?
With funding from Arts Council England and your help, Ceruleo want to bring this project to life with a 2018/19 UK tour including performances for Concerts in the West, Stroud Green Festival, Newbury Spring Festival, Buxton International Festival, Bury St Edmunds Festival, and Lake District Summer Music.
We will also be bringing Purcell's beautiful music to schools and local communities with a tailor made education project alongside our education partners, VCM Foundation and the Gresham Centre.
Join us and support our first ever touring project, bringing early music to festivals and families all around the UK!
Why do we need your help?
We are applying for funding from Arts Council England to cover the development costs of the project, including our rehearsal period, scriptwriting and a director. However, taking a show like this on tour is expensive! We would like to enhance our shows with lighting, costumes and props, bringing Purcell's London to life in a new and exciting way. Your donation will help us show the Arts Council that our supporters care about the project and are willing to invest in it.
To say thank you for your support, we have a range of rewards, that we hope you'll love, including:
- A Christmas card from Ceruleo
- An exclusive Ceruleo EP (not available online or in the shops!)
- A private singing or instrumental lesson of your choice
- A post-concert drink with Ceruleo
- A private concert in your home with Ceruleo
No donation is too small - we appreciate all your support and every little helps!
Sharing the project helps to spread the word. Please share your support on social media and tell your friends and family all about our exciting new show.
