Sovann Komar Outreach Program for Education is raising money to build a library in Kampong Speu Province. Yes, an entire library - complete with shelves, books, and comfortable cushions for the children to sit on. All for just £850!
Karuna Youth Cambodia is a fellow NGO which SKOPE has partnered with for this project. KYC has set up a free school in rural Kampong Speu, teaching English to 200 students six days a week. Awesome, right? And the children don't just show up for their classes. They hang out at the beautiful, safe, clean, school site for hours, chatting with their friends, playing games and generally having a good time. But just imagine how much of a better time they'd have if there were stacks of books to explore too! SKOPE wants to donate both English and Khmer language books to the school to encourage and foster a love of reading in these children.
We'll not only be stocking the library but building it from scratch! The structure won't be large (about 3 metres by 3 metres) but it will have everything the children need. We're building it in the style of the existing volunteer house, commonly referred to as Rainbow House, and with the help of local villagers and Sovann Komar's own children, we expect this project to be completed in just two days!
So let's look at what your money will go towards with an overview of the costs:
Building materials = £520
Shelves = £120
Books = £160
Cushions = £50
Simple! Everything else (transport, food, admin costs) will be covered either by Sovann Komar or KYC, ensuring every single penny you donate goes straight to the libary itself.
Here at SKOPE we believe reading and books are incredibly important. By learning to read, children are given the key to an endless world, delving in between the magical pages of stories, non-fiction books, and exploring our world through the written word. But they can't do that without books. And that's where SKOPE comes in! We're planning to get all our Khmer language books from Sipar, a local NGO in Phnom Penh with whom we've worked before. English books will come in the form of donations from expats, locals, and bookstores in the city who have already been approahced and asked for their help.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our work and we hope you are considering supporting us. Please share with your friends too!
