Disclaimer: I HATE asking people for money! Hate it!
When my friend said I should set up a crowdfunding page to help get my business off the ground, my insides were churning, I was squirming in my seat! I can't do that, I thought I can't ask people for money! NO! I am still not convinced it's a good idea. You get the picture! But here I am, asking for help, which I find super uncomfortable! I am going so far from my comfort zone it's unreal. And this is why...
About a year ago, after a 20-minute meditation session, I literally wrote a business plan in about five minutes. I still have no idea where it came from and it won't go away? Brodie Beauty was born!! And it's now my dream! I have used natural products for years, but most are expensive and still have loads of ingredients. To me, my kitchen cupboards contain beauty ingredients and I have 'concocted' my own natural products for as long as I can remember. I think it started with making 'perfume' from rose petals. I bet that's brought memories flooding back for some of you! It stank to high heaven didn't it!
When I was younger, I didn't see much beauty in the world, in fact, my world contained drugs, domestic abuse, bullying, and poverty. I was frightened for at least the first 20 years of my existence, if not more. My weekends contained prison visits or hiding behind my Nan's chair because I didn't want to go home, not luxurious beauty products. I just about survived. I didn't think I was worthy of anything, not kindness, love or help from others. But thankfully I am here to tell the tale. I am no longer ashamed of my past, in fact, I am grateful for it. Without it, I might not have this spark for more! More beauty, more freedom, more luxurious treats and the urge to share that with everyone who once thought they weren't worthy and those of us who just love anything natural.
My goal is to sell beautiful, luxurious natural products, containing no more than five ingredients. The packaging will be recyclable, reusable and refillable and my tag line is 'keep it simple'. Each product (five so far) has a few other uses and as you are buying straight from the maker, I give you natural tips and tricks, personal to you. P.S. My lip balm smells of chocolate!!!
I am ready to go!! Here is what I have done in the last year to get ready to sell my products, sorry about the techy bits!
Researched the EU Cosmetics Regulation (EC No. 1223/2009). This is a 150-page document!
Tested and re-tested products, refining recipes and testing them out on family and friends!
Researched and tested ingredients to find the best supplier – I will use Essential Oils Direct and The Soap Kitchen. I also obtain the MTDS – Material Testing Data Sheet for each ingredient I use.
All five products have a CPSR - Cosmetic Product Safety Reports (certification) as required by Regulation 1223/2009. You can’t legally sell in the UK until you comply with the regulations.
My products have been recorded on the European Commission Cosmetic Product Notification Portal.
Designed a logo with Monolith Designs and applied to the Intellectual Property Office to trademark my logo Trademark number: UK00003372645)
But I am now stuck, as I don't have the capital to buy everything in bulk. A catch 22! It's bonkers how many bottles you need to buy in one order! ????
