I wish to start a more environmentally friendly day hire boat company for the Norfolk Broads with small-sized electric boats.

by Sailing_High_Seas in Horstead, England, United Kingdom

I spent four continuous years living aboard a sailing boat on the Norfolk Broads and travelling through the 125 miles of navigable rivers and waterways. the Norfolk Broads is now a national park and is run primarily by an unelected and undemocratic authority which does not work well for the Broads or its many users. I state this as the waterways have lost the vast majority of the rubbish bins and are overrun by enormous oversized diesel engines. These boats are increasing in size and quantity year by year and are totally unfit for the waterways in every shape and form.

I have decided to offer a more suitable day boat hire which is aimed at removing diesel engines and their pollutants completely. In addition, I will offer a fleet of boats that are between 10 and 15 feet in length as opposed to 45 foot ten-tonne diesel monsters. The boats will be completely and utterly powered by electric motors.

I have salvaged two projects over the past 9 months and have been slowly restoring them fit for purpose.

One boat is a 14-foot Broom Saturn and the other is a 10-foot Almarine Seafire. I have acquired the moulds to manufacture more Almarine Seafires and therefore have the means to make a small fleet of these crafts. I intend to acquire more Broom Saturns in the future.

My initial market will be day boat hire which would be tourists etc but there is also a very big market for hiring these boats to fisherman in the fishing season and this includes the winter time.

My biggest obstacle is obtaining a location to operate out of. It is not a viable option to find somewhere to rent with a slipway and my only realistic option is to buy a physical mooring on the Norfolk Broads.

I have found a location that is available to purchase and this is currently advertised at £50,000.00.

The purpose of this mooring would be to use it as a location to store the small boats out of the water, whilst the boats would be made available to the prebooked public at publicly accessible moorings and slipways.

My aim is to secure a mooring through crowdfunding which will enable me to store the boats without the extortion of local landlords.
