What we do
We create confident, healthy, successful young people, who are focussed, determined and have pride in themselves and their community. We also create basketball legends.
Who we are and why we need funds
We are one of the oldest basketball clubs in London, founded in 1984 by the legendary Jimmy Rogers.
We are a non-profit community club, run by local volunteers, who charge absolute minimum fees so that no child or young adult need ever be excluded for financial reasons. This ethos is proving more and more difficult to sustain without the help and support of incredible volunteers and generous fund givers…like you.
How much we need…
We believe that every young person should have the chance to reach his or her full potential. We’re looking to raise 10k per year for the next 5 years to help us cover our essential running costs. These do look like large amounts of money but every donation, however small is a massive help.
For example -
£1000 buys court hire for 1 week during half term (min. of 10 weeks a year)
Travel to away games for U18 and U14 teams - £1500 a year
League registration fees for U12, U14 and u18 - £2500 a year
Referees for home games - £100 for U14’s and £140 for U18’s
Funds are also needed to update our website and for PR to ensure that any local child who wants to play basketball, knows they're welcome and how to get involved.
The funds will ensure that we can continue to be accessible to all young people, regardless of their family’s financial situation.
Topcats Basketball Club – why you should help us….
We are open to all. Hundreds of children of all ages, genders and ethnic backgrounds attend our open training sessions two nights a week and our full time camps in the school holidays at the Brixton Recreation Centre.
We not only teach basketball but also life skills – self-discipline, teamwork, self-confidence, respect and pride in the community.
We promote positive role models and enhance children’s aspirations. We teach them to cope with pressure and overcome obstacles so they can realise their full potential in life.
We encourage our members to act as ambassadors for Brixton at every opportunity and to disperse with negative stereotypes about its youth.
We have an impressive alumni of professional players and coaches as well as securing international scholarships (including Ivy League) for talented members. As well as those within basketball, we are incredibly proud of the number of alumni who have gone on to be successful business people and professionals.
We believe that our training provides a positive alternative activity keeping young people out of trouble and preventing destructive or criminal behaviour.
Our greatest achievement, over the years, has been the ability to produce strong minded and positively focused men and women who, without exception, attribute their ability to stay focused on their goals to the grounding they received at Topcats Basketball Club.
If you’re interested in greater involvement in the club or to work more closely with us, we'd love to hear from you. [email protected]
