Betty Playford embodies the spirit of Cowgate and she is a part of the rich history of the area, we want to name our new youth space Betty's Hut in her honor.
The close community of Cowgate has lost a lot of services in recent years, firstly the demolition of the sports center, then the cuts to the local youth service. The community saw agencies move out and take their service with them, the proud community of Cowgate wants to see the return of a youth and community project to Cowgate.
Projects4Change in partnership with Newcastle Community Asset Trust is working to help all local people and bring more opportunities to Cowgate. Projects4Change has spent the first half of this year listening to the needs of local people through regular detached sessions around Cowgate. In response to the communities requests for more projects, activities, and help to get ahead in life we have planned the renovation of a derelict green space within Cowgate. The area will include two fitted out and fully renovated shipping container buildings and a community garden. The new Betty's Hut will support the running of young peoples group work sessions, intergenerational work, volunteering, training, and enterprise. As well as be a base for trips and fun for local young people. The new space will help to build upon the potential of local people by letting them lead the way in creating their own solutions for their own community.
