“As I’ve said again and again, no brilliant jerks will be allowed, and no one will be protected because they are top performers.” – Uber board member Arianna Huffington, 2017.
In December 2008, two American entrepreneurs left a tech conference in Paris. As they stood in the street, unable to hail a cab, an idea landed with the falling snow: tap a button, get a ride. Uber was born.
In London in 2018, an Uber trip starts every second. There are 40 million active riders worldwide. The tech giant is valued at $60billion.
But the story of Silicon Valley’s sweetheart is not one of straightforward success. As the company has grown, it has been the subject of multiple scandals, from boardroom sexism, through to workers’ rights and passenger safety.
'Brilliant Jerks' is an unauthorised story about Uber. It tells of the company's past, present, and legacy for workers and users, from three fictionalised perspectives.
Mia, a troubled young mum, drives nights in Manchester. Benji, a drifting graduate, joins the company's London office. And Travis Kalanick, ex-CEO & former adviser to Trump, tries to figure out where it all went wrong.
Following a series of interviews with Uber employees and ex-employees, multi-award winning LIPSINK present 'Brilliant Jerks'. Written by journalist & playwright Joseph Charlton and directed by HighTide Associate Artist Rosy Banham, 'Brilliant Jerks' will be presented for the first time as part of VAULT Festival from 14 - 18 March 2018: https://vaultfestival.com/whats-on/brilliant-jerks/
We hope that this will be just the start for the show. Following this intial run at VAULT Festival, we intend to develop the piece further and tour it to regional theatres in cities and towns where the app operates and continues to thrive.
However, we need your support to help make this happen. We are hoping to raise in the region of £2500 to contribute towards the costs involved in presenting the show at VAULT Festival.
Your donations will go towards the following:
- Rehearsal space
- Legal fees: A libel read of the finished script and legal advice regarding the use of Uber in the play
- Production costs: Props, costumes, technical hires
- Marketing material: to help spread word of the production far and wide
- The team making it all happen: insuring that all of their hard work is acknowledged and rewarded properly
We hope you will be able to help us in bringing 'Briliant Jerks' to life in the best possible way.
