My project aims to create living spaces that promote mental health, wellbeing, and increase the sense of privacy and homeliness.

I am a refugee living in Manchester and I am also an interior designer. After working on HMO (houses with multiple occupancy) development for a while, I decided to create ZDESIGN which is an interior design social enterprise based on a project called Bright Project. My enterprise aims to create living spaces that promote mental health, wellbeing, and increase the sense of privacy and homeliness for asylum seekers, refugees, former homeless and families with low income.  According to the the Fundamental Facts about mental health 2016: "Asylum seekers and refugees face unique and complex challenges related to their mental health and they are often at greater risk of developing a mental health problem due to their past experiences (pre-immigration issues) and post-migration conditions that they face such as "inadequate housing" ( https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/statistics/mental-health-statistics-refugees-and-asylum-seekers). In addition, a report on mental health in homeless in 2009 stated that people who have experienced homelessness were twice at risk to be victims of mental health issues. Therefore, when given the opportunity to re-integrate their communities, former homeless need living spaces that can enable them to regain that sense of homeliness and ownership for them to make a fresh start. According to the mental health statistics, evidence have shown that people of lower socioeconomic status are at higher risk of developing and experiencing mental health problems. Reason why Bright project aims at tackling the issue by using interior design skills and biophilic design principles to provide with therapeutic internal spaces which will minimise the risk of mental health issues in our communities. My project also aims at raising awareness that our surroundings have an impact on our emotions and perceptions, and it also aims at reducing waste by using recycled materials as much as possible for a healthy environment. I plan to work with people who have skills such as painters, decorators, artists, handymen, no matter their background. I want to give opportunities to grow, develop social networks and promote integration, equality and positive change in communities. My vision is to give my clients the opportunity to live in aesthetic, functional and healthy living spaces that promote health and wellbeing. The project has been implemented in its planning stage in partnership with one well-known charity here in Manchester that provide accommodation for destitute asylum seekers and homeless refugees, and it has demonstrated the need of such living spaces that take a holistic approach in solving social issues. The money will enable to implement more projects which will ensure sustainability of Bright Project by attracting more accommodation providers who could see what value Bright project can add to their work and mission,  and how they can get involved and together make a change.
