To set up a daily nutritious breakfast club for disadvantaged families living with food insecurity.

by The Family Haven in Gloucester, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

With more funding, we'll be able to run the breakfast club for a longer period of time.  Our initial target is to run the club for a few months. This would enable us to run the project for around 6 months.

At the Family Haven we have been supporting vulnerable families since 1988 by providing a range of services to help improve the quality of their lives, strengthen their relationships and build a support network to reduce their isolation.  Now we want to set up a daily nutritious breakfast club to help our families living with food insecurity.

What we do

The Family Haven is an independent, local charity in Gloucester helping parents and their pre-school children by providing a warm, caring and supportive day centre where assistance and encouragement is available to help them to improve the quality of their lives. Our vision is a society where appropriate help and support is available to all families who need it. 1634738782_pic4.jpg

The need we address

We work with an average of about 60 families per year comprising around 80 adults and 100 children. Many of our families come from vulnerable backgrounds and lead very chaotic lives. Without us, many of these families would slip through the net, they would retreat further into themselves and become even more isolated. Being an independent organisation, we are able to treat each family individually. Our services are flexible, non-judgemental and confidential.

We have a staff of 11, including nursery nurses, outreach family support worker, cook, cleaner, and office staff. Our team plus the centre running costs are all vital to ensure we can be open to serve the families who attend our day centre.

Why we need your help

We are seeking funding to set up a healthy breakfast club for vulnerable families who attend the day centre. Families who attend the centre are unable to afford an adequate breakfast before coming to us. Mornings are also usually rushed, as routines aren’t always a priority. This will support a better start to everyone’s day.

With a healthy breakfast to begin the day, we will see a better balance of wellbeing, improvement of mood and mental health, as nutritional foods give you energy and prepare you for the day ahead. A breakfast club will also give parents the opportunity to make new friends with people in similar circumstances as themselves. It will enable them to build a support network to reduce their isolation.

The difference we make in people's lives

Coming to the day centre each morning to have breakfast will create structure in what is often a chaotic life.

People who come to us show the following outcomes:

1. Improved self-confidence - A reduction in isolation and the mental health problems this brings

2. Better resilience to cope with the challenges of life

3. Empowerment to move forward to a better future.

We will be able to measure the impact of this project when we monitor the overall improvement in mental health and wellbeing.  Parents will be in a routine of utilising their days better.  Changing unhelpful dietary routines will improve emotional regulation and develop better coping strategies, which will help parents to become better at problem solving.

We believe this will improve the  mindset of our families, support their confidence in seeking out more for themselves; utilising our in-house courses, supporting the ‘buddy system’ and feeling generally better about themselves.
