I am currently working towards my Queens Guide award; the highest award that a member of Girlguiding can work towards.
As part of the award I have to complete a Community Action element, in which I have to carry out a practical project on a chosen topic, which has a local, national and international impact.
For this element I have chosen to support that charity Against Breast Cancer by collecting bras to be donated.
The charity collect new, used, old and broken bras all year round, which are passed onto a recycling company, who do one of two things with them:
1. All good quantity bras are sent to disadvantaged countries to be used by the ladies.
2. Any bras that are beyond repair are dismantled appropriately and disposed of properly (keeping them out of our landfill sites)
For every tonne of bras that are collected, the charity receives £700 to fund breast cancer research, so the project is an all-round winner!
In order to encourage members to get involved and donate, I have designed and created a badge for all participants to receive in exchange for a bra for my collection! I brought the first lot of badges out of my own money and they were extremely successful and worked perfectly to encourage members to get involved! I have now nearly run out of badges and I would really like to get another batch made, due to the popularity of them, however I simply cannot afford to buy them myself again. Any donations to the cost of a new batch would be hugely appreciated and any additional money raised will be donated to the charity to further help them!
