We are an enthusiastic group of music-loving volunteers who run Celtic Music Radio. Since 2003 we’ve been supporting and sustaining established, developing, and up-and-coming artists across the spectrum of what’s sometimes known as “Celtic music”. Almost all of the current crop of (mainly) Scotland-based trad/folk/roots musicians got their first air-play through Celtic Music Radio.
Having grown in reputation with the regulator, Ofcom, through periodic Restricted Service Licences (RSL) in the early days, to a full-time Medium Wave licence, we now broadcast full-time on 95FM across Greater Glasgow, and around the world on mobile apps and online at www.celticmusicradio.net.
Our audience, too, has grown in the last fifteen years and we now estimate to reach approximately 40,000 per month on FM with a further 30,000 online. As well as broadcasting 24 hours a day from our Glasgow studios, we also contribute significantly to world-class and other festivals such as Celtic Connections (from which we broadcast live for its duration) Perthshire Amber, The Spree and the annual Glasgow Americana Festival.
Our philosophy is to support contemporary and traditional Scottish music, arts and culture, and to work with and for the community including those who do not have access to mainstream media. As we’ve grown, though, we have successfully broadened our output to include other ‘roots’ music genres such as Americana, Country and Blues.
Our aspiration is to grow, and eventually perhaps to establish a Scotland-wide radio network, where resources allow; we believe ourselves to be unique amongst broadcasters in the UK, with no other station giving 100% of its programming to these exciting genres.
