To acquire 18 photographs to illustrate Will Sutton: The Forgotten Trail Breaker of Vancouver Island.
by Jan Bridget in Todmorden, England, United Kingdom
I have spent the last three years researching, writing and re-writing this book. It is about my first cousin, 4 times removed. Here is a link to his page on my family heritage website: http://janetandstephen.info/foster/williamjohnsutton.html He led a fascinating life and died before he could write up information about his amazing geological collection - which is at the Pacific Museum of Earth in Vancouver, or all the surveys he conducted on Vancouver Island. He was famous when he died but has since been forgotten. I submitted my manuscript to the four main publishers in British Columbia who were most likely to publish and have been rejected by all four, although the last one, Heritage, gave some positive feedback: "it looks very interesting. It's an excellent collection of important research." I have asked for further feedback but suspect, as publishers, they are interested in making money and perhaps think the biography would not make a lot of money - they are probably right and I didn't write it to make money anyway. So I am taking the advice of a local writer (Helena Whitbread of Anne Lister fame) and am going to self-publish on the internet. But the photographs are crucial.
