Bloomin' Buds Theatre Company is a non for profit which aims to increase access to opportunity and to the arts for people from lower and working class backgrounds. We do this by running weekly sessions in community centres, community performances, public events, workshops in schools and create professional theatre pieces.
We started Bloomin' Buds as we were the first in our family to go to university, we want to inspire other young people that they can achieve no matter where they are from. We currently run 3 weekly sessions in Rockwell Community Centre Bradford which aim to increase confidence, aspiration and access to the arts for the community.
Throughout the 4 years we have been running we have done several workshops in schools, community centres and hosted public evens such as an exhibition all about class. Our work has been largely unfunded, but we are working hard to combat this.
Last year we created 'Brenda's Got a Baby' a verbatim play about working class women and their access to opportunity. The play follows two sisters: Brenda who is 16 and pregnant and her older sister Amy who is going to university. The play was created by interviewing women, research and personal experience. 'Brenda's Got a Baby' enjoyed a successful full run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2018, it was rated a 4star show and audience members found it relatable, real, thought proving and a must see!
Taking our own play to the Fringe was a dream come true for us, we never thought it would be possible. We got to talk about working class issues on an international platform and express the voices of working class women.
Whilst we were in Edinburgh we met a theatre company based in New York who had also created a verbatim theatre piece about women 'In their footsteps'. We have decided to do an exchange, we will take our play to New York and they will bring theirs to Bradford and Leeds. This is the opportunity of a lifetime for us, our team and our company.Creating debate about working class issues on an international scale is important. This opportunity will also allow us to grow as a company, increase our reputation, experience and our network. But we cannot do it without support, we want to go to New York for 10 days and this is a costly endeavour. There is no funding available for this so we will be working hard to raise the money through crowdfunders, fund raisers and anything else we can possibly do.
