Bloom Bakery and Catering is a social enterprise based in Lewisham, South East London. We produce unique bakery products and catering for private and corporate events, and at the same time provide training opportunities for people facing a range of challenges such as homelessness or poor mental-health .
We have a big vision to create a thriving bakery and catering social enteprise, with an aim to open retail outlets and cafes across Lewisham borough. Our mission in all that we do is to create opportunity, foster community and promote wellbeing through the work of Bloom. We need your support to make it happen in 2018.
We've been piloting Bloom over the last 18 months, running baking training programmes, pop-up cafes, and market stalls - all aiming to support people facing unemployment or social exclusion, to develop skills, gain confidence and nurture their own wellbeing. Trainees on our courses face a range of challenges including homelessness, mental ill-health, disabilities, caring responsibilities and long-term unemployment. Our aim is that through Bloom, we can support people facing social exclusion to prosper and to thrive.
We're now set on a model that really works and we're looking for your support to help us to grow:
- We want to run at least six training programmes every twelve months, reaching 50 people in Lewisham facing social exclusion. Trainees on our programmes learn basic baking and catering skills, gain an accredited qualification and are able to participate in a supportive, structured environment that aims to: create opportunities, foster community and promote wellbeing.
- We also want to expand the range of bakery and catering services that we offer - providing essential work experience opportunities for people coming through our training, and generating income that will fund and grow our training scheme.
Our aim is to be a self-sustaining social enterprise, without reliance on grants or donations. And we've already raised a significant part of the seed funding that we need to enable us to achieve our ambitious growth plans. Our crowdfunding campaign in the final push to help Bloom grow to the next stage of its development. Your support will be an investment in our future, that will allow us to provide sustainable support to long term unemployed people in South East London for many years to come.
What will we do with your pledges?
£9,000 is the remaining funding that we need to take Bloom to the next stage of its development.
Specifically, reaching our target will enable us to employ professional kitchen and training supervisor, who will deliver our training scheme for up to 50 local people facing unemployment. This staff member will also enable us to grow our range of social enterprise catering, which will generate income and allow the project to be sustainable in the long-run. It will also enable us to move into a bigger, better equipped kitchen, suitable for running a full-time catering operation.
We have already raised part of the funding we need to achieve these goals, through grant applications and small scale trading of our baked goods, we are looking for support from the crowd to enable us to raise the rest.
Our Stretch Target
£9,000 is the minimum that we need to grow the work of Bloom. We have a stretch target of £16,000. Achieving this goal would allow us to take on a part-time Kitchen and Training Assistant which in turn would increase our capacity to train people on the Bloom programme. The additional £7000 would part fund the salary of this post, with the remainder funded through our income from our trading.
With this second staff member in place, we could offer Bloom training to at least 75 local people in the next 12 months. We would also seek to create this position as an apprenticeship post, allowing a participant on our initial Bloom programme to progress into the role and continue their vocational training at a higher level.
