A LITTLE BIT ABOUT US

Kia Ora, we’re the Behn Quartet! We're a string quartet based in London, and formed of players from the Netherlands, New Zealand, England and Wales.  We are the current CAVATINA Chamber Music Fellows at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and we recently won the Charles Hennen First Prize at the Orlando International Chamber Music Competition, 2017 in the Netherlands. We take our name from Aphra Behn, the 17th-century playwright, novelist, political activist, spy, prisoner, and philanthropist of the arts. She was one of the first women ever to earn a living from writing, and she pioneered for freedom of expression to be celebrated for all people.

Music is the most important thing in our lives, and not only are we able to do something we love every day, but we wish to share our work with YOU! It doesn’t matter whether we perform in the concert hall, a residential care home, or in schools; music is well known to have the power to connect and to bring people from all different backgrounds together, and we are proud to be a part of this.

THE TOUR

In April 2018 we have been invited to tour as Encompass Artists with Chamber Music New Zealand. We’re thrilled to take part in their 2018 season, and we will be travelling from the Northern-most to the Southern-most cities in New Zealand.

We are so excited to be giving 10 concerts as part of this professional tour, and hopefully some outreach workshops on the way. We will be featured as part of CMNZ’s Kaleidoscope Series, their highest platform for chamber music, also featuring artists including the Takács Quartet, Borodin Quartet, and Brodsky Quartet - these guys have been our inspiration since we first started playing string quartets so we are honoured to be a part of this alongside them!

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP

This tour offers us the chance to connect with new audiences, and take part in high profile performance platforms which will help further our career at this critical point. We are so happy to have been selected out of many applicants to tour as Encompass Artists with CMNZ, and know that this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us as an ensemble.

But, in order to be able to travel half-way across the world to New Zealand, we need your help

We need to raise £6000 which will cover the costs of:

  • our international flights
  • car hire in New Zealand
  • 16 nights of accommodation
  • Other tour-related costs along the way which are not already funded

Setting up a string quartet is like starting up a business: we invest long, and often unpaid hours, and it limits many of our freelance opportunities to earn money on the side. We require financial help in these early stages to ensure that we are able to take part in opportunities like these, which will help to catapult our career to the next level. At this point, we are reaching out to YOU, to help us make this tour possible. We are so grateful for any help you can give us!
