New stretch target

Theatre making is an expensive business. If we exceed our essential crowdfunding target of £6k we can still use an extra £4k to improve the quality of the production by contracting more professionals - such as extra design, stage management and production staff - to make the show bigger, better and help the project run even more smoothly. The more robust and exciting the team, the more people will get to hear the vital message of the piece.

About this project

What happens when mental illness, addiction and begging are facts of daily life?

What happens when you realise no-one is ever going to help you again?

What happens to ordinary people when there is nowhere else to go?

Through the chaotic bustle of living, sleeping and begging, Nick, Pearl and Paul tell their stories of life on the streets of York.

The Beggars of York is a brand new play by renowned veteran York poet Don Walls. Don has published 6 volumes of poetry the last 10 years alone but now, aged 86, is making his theatre writing debut with this sharp, poignant and defiant record of an ongoing chapter in York’s social history. The play is based on the life and experiences of Don’s late son, Peter, who lived on the streets of York for 30 years.

The play is part eulogy, part performance-poetry and part exposé of the criminal justice system and will make you reconsider what happens on the very street outside your window.

Why we need your help

Don and his team have been offered a short premiere run of The Beggars of York at the newly refurbished York Theatre Royal in July 2016. But we desperately need your help to fund the project. Every penny we raise through this campaign will go towards:

  • Working with people who have experienced homelessness, mental ill-health and/or addiction to develop the play;
  • Employing actors, designers, stage managers and other artists to make sure the message is told in the slickest and most affecting way;
  • Raising awareness of the project and its key issues though our outreach, education and marketing activites.

This is more than just a play. This is a chance to speak up for the slienced voices of people living through incredible hardship on the streets of an affluent and beautiful city. This is a chance to help raise awareness, to make a positive difference through art and to bring about social change.

Even if you don't feel you can pledge right now, you can subscribe to our mailing list by clicking here to be kept up to date with the project's developments.
