Community Share Project

The Beeston Ploughshare

Help Beeston Community Enterprises Ltd, a community asset company formed by the residents of Beeston, to buy their local pub and return it to the thriving business it once was.

Beeston lost its shop in 2009, and in a recent survey of 250 local households the importance of keeping the pub was rated by the majority as 5 out of 5.  Residents also stated that a shop, café and decent, good value food were key to the longevity and success of the new community venture, which is exactly the plan for the future of the Ploughare.

With an amazing history that can be traced back to 1575, The Ploughshare is the only remaining pub in the village of around 500 residents, and a true friendly Norfolk local.  In the past a thriving business, and visisted regularly by many outside the village, especially from neighbouring villages who don't have their own pub, butsadly due to high rent and poor management it closed in January of this year.

Many local groups including the Cricket Club, paragliding club, friendly neighbours and lunchtime group and the clay pigeon shoot have pledged their support, as well as clubs, societies and patrons from further afield who regularly visit Beeston.  With a thriving business community and commercial units, plus several busy large working farms situated within the rural village of Beeston, it opens up the possibility of catering to more than just the residents.  Beeston also has a growing Ofsted rated 'Good' Primary School that attracts families from further afield and currently they buy in hot school lunches from outside the village, so another potential opportunity.

A detailed business plan has been drawn up and already funding has been secured through the Plunkett Foundation.  Other grants and avenues of funding are also being investigated, as well as fundraising events being run throughout the year.

The target for the initial community share offer is £350,000 to prevent the pub and car park from being sold off by the owner as a housing development.

The ambition is to provide a village hub amenity for the whole community to use. By sound management and entrepreneurial activity there is no reason the Ploughshare won't become a profitable business that will be able to grant a percentage of profits each year to other village amenities, clubs and societies.

The Ploughshare will be run so that it is a sustainable business that can continue to provide services to the local community for many years to come and reach out to the surrounding hamlets, farms and villages. This sustainability will be able to support the community in both social and economic ways by re-enforcing the already vibrant activities found there.

Beeston Brewery is a micro-brewery which operates in our village producing a selection of excellent beers. The local population want a local outlet for Beeston Brewery CAMRA award winning beers. This beer will be served in the pub along with lagers and other guest draught ales.  We will also offer wines, soft drinks, spirits and cider.

The immense support behind the campaign clearly backs up the fact that the residents, our future customers, are adamant the village needs a pub.  With vision and a strong management team, high levels of customer service and the right product offering,  the opportunities for the future are endless.

In conclusion Beeston Community Enterprises Ltd is committed to achieving the goal of buying and running The Ploughshare Pub “For The Community By The Community”.

It is essential that the fabric of a vibrant community way of life is secured for current and future inhabitants of Beeston and the surrounding area.  The social well-being of the community through clubs, societies and village gatherings will be enhanced by this venture.

A village Pub is the Hub of activity through communication, humour, music, eating and socialising across all age groups and social groups.

We are determined to succeed in our efforts and would like to thank you in advance for buying shares in our community business

The pub is an essential part of the community.
