Founded by a Cosmetic Scientist, the Black Beauty and Fashion Awards (BBFA) is the first and only annual award of its kind in the United Kingdom. Launched officially at Parliament in July, hosted by Chi Onwurah MP, Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy and Innovation.
The BBFA is created to encourage entrepreneurship in the development, manufacturing and promotion of afro skin and hair care products and to give annual awards to the manufacturers of beauty and grooming products suitable for use by BME individuals, a sector of the UK beauty industry worth millions and growing rapidly. BBFA is the only industry award that focuses on product development, manufacturing, advertising and trade in this sector.
We believe that entrepreneurs are the lifeblood of a healthy economy, and BBFA is a platform designed to assist in the continued growth and development of the industry. The awards also open up opportunities for BME entrepreneurs into a market that is usually dominated by industry professionals and business owners from other ethnic backgrounds.
These activities will help increase household incomes and relieve poverty in our target BME groups.
The effects of being largely excluded in mainstream beauty advertising, under-representation within supply chains, and a lack of understanding of our unique beauty culminates in a detrimental effect on the BME community economically as well as impacting the mental health of some individuals. Fashion and Beauty are inextricably linked and are even more so in the heritage, traditions and cultures of communities within the BME community.
A fundamental part of BBFA’s mission is to foster advancement, actively promote the industry whilst encouraging diversity, innovation and entrepreneurship. Let's move beauty forward together.
