Batten Bay BioBlitz 2014

To raise awareness of wildlife in and around Plymouth Sound and collect valuable biodiversity data to support conservation in the area.

We did it!

On 8th Sep 2014 we successfully raised £1,779 of £1,500 target with 33 supporters in 17 days

New stretch target

Thank You!!!

Thank you to everyone so far who has helped us to reach our fundraising target for the event!

Any extra money pledged now will be put towards the Marine Biological Association's education Program, helping communities explore their local shores and bringing marine life into the classroom. We will run free school and public seashore events and carry out school workshops locally. Additional funding will also be used to support a similar 2015 BioBlitz event.

Please support the Batten Bay BioBlitz!  A BioBlitz is a race to record as much wildlife as possible in a set area over a 24 hour period. The free event will raise community awareness and support for nature conservation and science in a fun and engaging way.

The event is happening on the 12th and 13th of September and is approaching fast. It is totally free and relies on the dedication of the many volunteers who help bring it all together. You can play a vital role and make a difference in this citizen science project by making a pledge and showing your support!

The excitement of finding your first crab

We will help the local community, including families and 300+ school children to work alongside scientists and volunteers from all over the country to join the challenge. The BioBlitz will build an appreciation for the natural environment in the area and inspire future generations to act responsibly to protect it. The event is open to all and will include bug hunts, bird walks, arts and crafts, rockpooling, wild flower walks, snorkeling, and an open laboratory. The valuable snapshot of wildlife will be used to inform conservation measures for the area.

This will be our 6th BioBlitz event in the South West and we are trying to make it the biggest and best one so far! We are aiming to record over a thousand types of plants, animals and other living things, and attract as many people as possible to take part.  A BioBlitz is a fantastic way to show people the diversity of wildlife to be found in this special protected area and raise support for the environment. It is also a great opportunity to promote science, wildlife recording and conservation in a fun and accessible way to a wide audience. Experts and enthusiasts come together to learn with one another and to share and spread their knowledge and respect for nature in a fun and informal way. This type of community work is an ongoing investment. By providing first hand experiences with nature we hope to promote positive behavioural changes for the future and bring hope for the protection and conservation of our natural heritage.

We (The Marine Biological Association) are a charity which has conducted research into all aspects of the sea since 1884. We have always worked closely with our local community in Plymouth and members around the world to learn life in our seas and oceans. In previous events, we have worked with a variety of partners to ensure we cover all aspects of life on land and in the sea, and how these interact. This year, we are proud that Plymouth University Marine Institute and South West Fish are supporting the event. We are also grateful for the support of over 20 organisations including Devon Wildlife Trust, Buglife, the Marine Conservation Society, The National Marine Aquarium and many others. All partners bring unique skills and expertise to the event, making each one different. This year's BioBlitz will run alongside the Plymouth Blue Mile event and is part of the Plymouth's Ocean City Festival. Together we will celebrate wildlife and raise awareness of the conservation of our seas and coastal environment.

The Batten Bay BioBlitz is already shaping up to be a great event but we need additional support to make it even bigger and better. We would like to provide additional support for our dedicated volunteers. We would also like to purchase/ hire additional equipment and resources and fund additional promotion, extra family activities and hire additional rooms for the event. The additional support you provide will help towards our goal of making the Batten Bay BioBlitz 2014 bigger and better and increase the positive impact it will have on our local community and wildlife conservation.

“Plymouth University is proud to be a partner of the Batten Bay BioBlitz. In these changing times it is crucially important that we document the incredible variety of life of our coastal and marine environments. This BioBlitz will help to increase public awareness of these areas, and also help to safeguard them for future generations.”

Richard Ticehurst, Plymouth University's Marine Institute.

"It's important to bring the community together and experience what sort of wildlife exists on our coastline. Understanding how we can best preserve them for future generations, while encouraging responsible attitudes towards their environments and the beautiful coastline on our doorsteps. We're proud to be part of this year's Mount Batten BioBlitz!"

Andrew Jinman, South West Fish.
