Barnstaple pilot Gig Club CIO is running a fund-raising campaign to purchase a 19th century warehouse on Rolle's Quay, adjacent to the Sea Cadets Headquarters. If successful the building will be refurbished to provide boat and equipment storage and workshops on the ground floor and in the yard area. The first floor will be a large meeting room capable of holding up to 80 people, toilets, and a small kitchenette area, with disabled access. All of the facilities will be made available to any other organisation in need of such facilities. Interest has already been received from Bideford Canoe club, local surf lifesaving clubs, Petroc, the WI, University of the Third Age, Morris Dancers and local schools.
The vision is to create a water sports centre and community facility for the people of the Barnstaple area, to foster the regeneration of the run-down Rolle's Quay area, and to encourage leisure and sporting use of the river Taw in Barnstaple. This will also help to restore the maritime heritage that has largely been forgotten in Barnstaple.
Planning permission is in place for change of use, and professional surveys have already been completed for asbestos in the building, the presence of bats, and the structural condition of the building. Architectural technical drawings are complete for the necessary remedial works once the purchase has been achieved.
So far the club has raised £26,000 through it's own fund raising efforts and has promises of further funding from Fullabrook Community Fund (£34,000) and Sport England (£75,000). This leaves a further £65,000 needed to achieve the £200,000 purchase price for the building
