Established in 1935 by a small group of theatre enthusiasts, Bangor Drama Club went on to produce its first full length production in 1938. In the early days, with no premises, the club met in halls and hotels to rehearse and performed their productions in the Legion Hall and Dufferin Hall. Since 1938 we have continued to produce three high-quality productions each year. We are one of 14 voluntary drama clubs in Northern Ireland with 150 members and growing all the time. We have a membership which spans the generations and a real family feel with an interest in, and a commitment to the club handed down through family groups. We celebrated our 80th anniversary in our 2015/16 season during which we staged a very successful gala production of Pygmalion.
The club acquired premises on Primrose Lane just off Central Avenue after WWII and membership doubled. Following the closure of the Little Theatre, also on Central Avenue, we converted our clubrooms into the Studio Theatre which seated 76 people. We ran these premises successfully for 20 years using the money raised from productions to maintain the building and fund further productions.
The club regularly takes productions on the road to summer theatre venues such as Portrush and Enniskillen and also competes with considerable success at festivals across Ireland. We have also performed further afield in Japan, Florida and Milwaukee to much acclaim.
In January this year we moved to the former Good Templar Hall on Hamilton Road, Bangor having purchased the property from the local council with the generous financial assistance of Ulster Garden Villages. Having recently completed on the sale of our old premises we are now very keen to begin work on renovating our new premises. We have been amazed and humbled by the generosity of the community of Bangor and the surrounding area and are nearing our fundraising target amount. Achieving this will allow us to begin a Phase 1 renovation of the building which will provided a usable performance space with 100+ fixed seats, foyer/bar area, kitchen, dressing rooms and toilet facilities.
Ideally we would like to be able to install reatractable seating as it is our hope to hire the premises to other community groups. The additional floor area created by retractable seating will open our premises to a wider range of uses.
We have a number of donation options to suit every budget and some great rewards too. We very much hope you will consider supporting our cause to help us make our dream a reality.
