Getting employment for young people has just got harder. And imagine if you have a learning difficulty, or self esteem issues, or come from a difficult environment. Then it is even harder.
Covid has created a jobs crisis and this is only going to get worse with the oncoming Brexit which will shrink the economy further. Traditional careers for young people are becoming fewer and fewer as the retail sector dwindles and more people become unemployed. Employers are no longer happy with qualifications - they now want young people to have experience and this is really hard to get especially if you don't have self confidence and interpersonal skills
ERM CIC work with young people to make films. We want to take this a stage further and create an interactive You Tube Channel using Heritage as a hook. We want to find heritage objects and create teaser films to engage with the public as to what they are used for. We will then engage with young people to make films describing the heritage of the objects. We will then post these films on You Tube. These films will be a mixed bag some will be documentary style but others may be humorous.
The young people we will be working with with be young people with a variety of different mental challenges. These will vary according to the individual. The aim will be the same to develop the young people training them in presentation skills, interpersonal skills, research skills and increasing their self confidence. We will also help them with job applications and interview practice
This project will create a number of films on You Tube. The film attached to this project was created with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. We want to make shorter films in a similar vein. The ultimate aim will be to create ERM TV where young people from all over the country can get involved in posting footage and engaging with others.
The project will create a group of young people with confidence, fabulous interpersonal skills and the ability to be flexible in any situation they find themselves.
ERM CIC have found that Heritage is a subject that easily breaks down barriers. Young people can easily talk with older people about this subject and it is one where there are no boundaries. It is also interesting and giving young people a free rein with a camera we have found is a great way to break down boundaries and create exciting and challenging footage. There are also a lot of resources in Norwich for this kind of project and we can get support from organisations such as the Millennium Library, the Archive Centre and Young People's groups
ERM CIC have been working with the community for nearly 10 years. In that time we have worked with many different age groups and sectors of the community. For more information on ERM CIC take a look at our projects page https://ermprojects.com/
