WHAT IS A POET'S SPACE, AND WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
A Poet's Space is a new digital platform showcasing the talent of British poets of all demographics.
The idea came to me one day whilst sitting on my desk at work. As I started to daydream, I asked myself, if I had the resources, what idea would I love to turn into a reality? And I responded (in this daydream) with "a show where British poets can perform their pieces in a unique setting; like Later… with Jools Holland but for poetry. '' I quickly snapped back into reality and started brainstorming ideas and used my lunch break to look at studios in London. I knew that I had to go ahead with this idea or I'd live to regret it. In May, we scouted six poets in order to pilot our idea in an arts studio in East London. The result was this: the pilot series for A Poet's Space!
More people, including the millennial generation and generation Z, are taking an interest in poetry. Last year, according to stats from Nielsen BookScan, poetry book sales increased by £1.3m - and two-thirds of buyers were younger than 34 - a 12% growth from previous years, and an all time high. Andre Breedt, for Nielsen BookScan said "Poetry is resonating with people who are looking for understanding. It is a really good way to explore complex, difficult emotions and uncertainty."
I had a realisation that many of the best online poetry platforms are in the USA, like Button Poetry and Def Poetry Jam. There are many poetry and slam collectives and groups across the UK as well as open mic nights, events and dedicated venues. I wanted to create a platform where people of all different backgrounds and ages can share their work and inspire others.
WHY ARE WE FUNDRAISING AND WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?
When I came up with the idea and did the first shoot, I used £400 from my savings to kickstart the project. We are fundraising to cover our production costs for the next few years as well as marketing, promotion and business registration so myself and my team no longer need to dip into our savings.
Here is a breakdown of where the £3000 will go towards:
Studio hire to shoot every three months for the next two years
Equipment hire to shoot every three months for the next two years
Travel expenses for poets and crew working on the shoot
Marketing and promotion (promotional material, sponsored posts)
Trademark and business registration
An exclusive event for our backers (£75+)
