We provide a safe place for new-borns to sleep and the basics for mum and baby for first 3 months. The baskets are given anonymously to provide hope that babies are a gift and Mum’s are valued. We work with midwives, health visitors and other professional groups to ensure that we provide support directly where it is most needed. The team lovingly collect, sort and package a Moses Basket starter pack as a free, attractive gift including clothing and toiletries for both mother and baby. Baby Basics, Northampton has been operating for five years. Each year we have seen an increase in demand for our service.
We work in the local community so families can ensure their precious baby things no longer needed are valued for another child and our volunteers can support our project and feel empowered to try new things and work in the community.
This unique provision is the only one in Northamptonshire and yet we have only reached 17% of those in need – we want to reach more to make a difference for our county.
We use our data collected on every basket to ensure that we are successful in tackling their specific needs as well as developing our provision to become more targeted. By partnering with professionals, who are working face to face with mums and families in the community, we are confident that we are targeting those most in need and this is upheld by the statistics and the feedback given. Last year we carried out a referrers survey where 100% of participants agreed that the items we provide improve the quality of life for the families they work with, reduce stress for mothers and families, bring joy and increase confidence in their ability to cope with a new baby.
