Did you know 65% of supermarket baby food is sweet? Contributing to a rise in tooth decay in pre-school children. This is because 72% of babies will be given shop baby food as part of their weaning diet. We are Babies Kitchen; The first freshly made, diverse & chilled halal baby food in the UK. Our mission is to change the way babies eat giving them a world of variety, textures and tastes to build a better eater forever.
Freshly made in our London kitchen inspired by traditional recipes from best of British, Asian and Afro-Caribbean. Handcrafted for tiny tummies we create nutritionally balanced dishes suitable for babies 6-12 months for food conscious parents frustrated at the lack of natural unprocessed weaning foods on the market.
These products are lacking in nutrient density to support child development. These meals are not meeting babies iron requirements the meals are too low in iron with this being one of the critical nutrients needed during the second six months of a baby’s life part of our mission at Babies Kitchen is to insure in line with NHS/government guidelines a meal with us means a baby is receiving their nutritional needs just like they would from a home cooked dish.
Pouches are not encouraging healthy eating habits, children are not encountering seeing and smelling food because it Is disguised in a brightly coloured packet. Babies need to learn how real food looks, feels and tastes. Many pouches include juice that isn’t noted on the front when vegetables, meat and grains are sweetened with fruit they are less likely to eat these foods later as children’s taste-buds are set by 3. Teaching them to prefer smooth, liquidly food.
Drinking food isn’t always as satisfying as eating it most babies are not feeling full after slurping on a pouch which can lead to over eating. Part of our mission is to give our food more of a homely taste; we can deliver this with our hand cooking method, following our unique recipes, preparing our ingredient’s, using fresh ingredients/herbs & spices changing the overall quality of the end dish.
I felt it was important to incorporate the exposure of a fair mixture of traditional dishes as this is part of the training of taste-buds for later life for children of who are of that origin or simply just embracing something new; for example, one of our super traditional dishes is “savoury” roast chicken, stuffing and veg & light gravy. This dish is super fresh, filling and has a variety of textures and tastes because we used 2 different cooking methods, “slightly sweet” lamb tagine because of the use of butternut squash, apricots and cinnamon and beef ‘no pepper-pot’ consisting of beef, butterbeans a coconut stew sauce with yam, spinach and pumpkin.
All these dishes include a range of other vegetables, herbs and spices to give more flavour and fullness using traditional recipes easy to digest. We have hopes to expand other parts of fresh baby food in the future but these dishes have been a hit so far.
