Animal Welfare Party
4th June 2019A thank you to everyone supporting AWP's EU Elections Fighting Fund
The AWP Team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone supporting our EU Elections Fighting Fund and EU Election Campaign throughout May. The support we have received has been phenomenal and has meant so much to us throughout what proved to be an intense but very successful campaign.
Donations to our campaign allowed us to print and distribute 123,000 election leaflets within the London Region. Our targeted social media posts (targeted to audiences in London) were seen by 51,983 people and, of these, 31,198 engaged with the targeted posts in some way (reacted, commented, shared or viewed video).
As you may be aware, votes for Animal Welfare Party in the London Region in the EU Election totalled 25,232 (around 1.125%). This saw us become the 8th party in the London Region. This was our most successful EU elections result ever and, we feel, all the more impressive, given the political climate in which the EU elections took place in the UK and the possibility there was for votes for our party to be 'squeezed'.
AWP took part in the EU elections as part of a wider 'Animal Politics EU' movement made up of 11 parties for animals from across Europe. The chief successes of our wider movement were:
- Portugal's PAN won a seat in the EU Parliament for the first time.
- Germany's Tierschutzpartei also won a seat in the EU Parliament.
- The Netherlands' PvdD retained their existing seat in the EU Parliament.
This means there will now be three dedicated representatives for animals in the EU Parliament.
- In Belgium, DierAnimal gained their first ever representative in the Brussels Regional Parliament. The party was founded only last year so this is an amazing success.
Across all 11 EU member states we believe that 'Animal Politics EU' parties have demonstrated, in no uncertain terms, what strength of feeling there is from the public on animal and environmental issues.
Sincere thanks to each and every one of you who has helped make the above successes happen.
