To help children and adults with autism and learning disabilities stay active and healthy, accessing new activities /maintaining friendships

by Kith & Kids in London, England, United Kingdom

New stretch target

We  will be able to recruit and train even more volunteers to support people with autism through the summer (via zoom and 1:1 walks) and right into the autumn term, when classroom and sports hall activities will start again.

The need for our project

Children and adults with autism and learning disabilities need regular, structured activities, with individual support, to maintain and develop life skills, stay healthy, and overcome social isolation. Due to COVID19 Kith & Kids has had had to rethink how we can deliver our regular activities safely. We  have started delivering on-line activities but much more needs to be done.

How we will help now

We will further develop our on-line learning and leisure activities, so that our disabled participants will have a good structure to their week (e.g. maths, cooking, music, fitness), yoga, story telling).

In the meantime, we will help them plan for a return to normality. Given the high levels of anxiety  for many, we will have to make this a well-supported, gradual process. For this purpose we need to train up new volunteers. Initially to act as "Zoom-buddies, with whom they can discuss their worries and what the new "normal" may look like. Or simply to start doing some activities together (playing some music together, having a bit of a dance, or even doing some 1:1 walks in their local park).

Summer activities

In the summer we hope to be able to run in-person activities in small groups (" bubbles"). Using out door spaces as much as possible but also providing some quiet in-door activities ( relaxation, soft play, quiet art...).

Altogether we will be supporting between 70 and 80 children and adults with autism and learning disabilities, as well as their parents and carers.

Your support

Your donations will enable us to recruit and train new volunteers for the all important individual support needed. So if at all possible, please make a donation to Kith & Kids.

Thank you!
