Who we are and what we do.
Autism Wessex provide social care, support and education to people of all ages with autism. One of our services is a specialist School in Christchurch, Dorset, for children and young people with autism and associated difficulties.
We always strive to provide our students with the very best education, care and therapies, supporting them in life's journey to achieve their full potential.
What is the problem
Lockdown and Covid-19 Restrictions have taken a toll on us all. For the children and young people we support and their families it has been life limiting. Sensory difficulties with face masks, behavioural difficulties with social-distancing and the general lack of knowledge and understanding about the autism spectrum condition within our wider society, have all made it near impossible for our students to get out and about with their families. This has resulted in increased isolation from their local community, loneliness and physical in-activity.
What is the answer?
We want to get our children and young people active, fit and socialising again in a new and inspiring Autism Adventure Playground.
Our playground is in desperate need of some love and attention, it has not been updated since the school was built back in 2001 and we want to bring it up-to-date with your help.
We are nearly there with our fundraising. Unfortunately, due to the difficulties suppliers are having under the new lockdown restrictions, costs have risen. The cost of the project was originally circa £100,000 and we have managed to raise £86,000. However, the new cost of the project is £114,000 and we now need to raise £28,000 to get the playground built in the August 2021 Summer Holiday!
