To change attitudes and behaviours toward victim blaming, focusing on future juror opinions and challenging sexual assault myths.

by Christchurch Ambulance station in Bournemouth, England, United Kingdom

My project ‘Asking for it’, is a series of mug shot images, which invites readers to question society’s historic tendency to victim blame, particularly in relation to sexual and gender based violence.

The charity STARS ( has acted as a specialist partner, ensuring the work really tackles this current issue and drives ‘social change through challenging the opinions of potential future jurors’.

The project has also had input from other specialists, including professors of law and psychology at Bournemouth University (BU).

Interactive exhibitions can be experienced at The Atrium Gallery, Bournemouth University (May-June 2020) and subsequently at Poole Lighthouse (mid September – mid October 2020).  There is also a 3rd exhibition currently in planning.

The production costs of the project have so far been self-funded, with some fundraising support.  However, due to the booking for 3 separate exhibitions (so far), we are further fundraising to contribute towards the sizeable cost of producing the exhibition prints, frames etc.

This is an art and education project, but also serves as publicity for STARS Dorset and a way for them to reach and support more survivors, as well as further their aims of reducing victim blaming and increase positive attitudes towards survivors and consent.
