Crowdfunding to help students from underprivileged schools discover the joy of words and writing.

New stretch target

“Amazingly, we’ve reached our original target of £5,000 in less than a month! This is entirely thanks to the generous support of nearly 90 of you. I’m so grateful and have been so moved by your generosity and all of your lovely comments. We are now stretching our target to £6,000. An additional £1,000 will enable Arvon to deliver online writing workshops, led by professional writers, that will reach up to 100 state school students from disadvantaged areas. Every penny we raise for Arvon’s Schools Programme will help young people find their voice and express themselves through creative writing. Please give if you can." - Annie Garthwaite

Debut author Annie Garthwaite is crowdfunding to bring 16 young people on an Arvon creative writing residential course. It could be life-changing.

Annie says: I’m kickstarting the fundraiser with a £500 donation – and challenging you to grow it to £5,000.

That’s what it takes to bring 16 young people to Arvon. Once there, they’ll work with published writers and experienced tutors who’ll help them unlock their inner writer and discover the life-enhancing magic of words.

Together, we’ll be giving this gift to the young people who most need and deserve it; students from cash-strapped state schools who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford to send them to Arvon. It could change their lives. Certainly it will enrich their days, build vital life skills and bolster inner confidence.

For me, this is payback time. In July this year – at the great age of 59 – I’ll publish my first novel. That would never have happened were it not for two inspirational state school teachers – Keith Hill and Bob Martin of the Manor Comprehensive School. More than forty years ago, they ignited in me a love of words and story that’s been with me ever since.

It was a great gift. And I want other young people to have it too.

Maybe you can give a little. Maybe you can give a lot. But, whatever you give, it will make a difference. Who knows? You might even help inspire a future novelist, poet or playwright.  Wouldn’t that be a great thing?

About Arvon and the Schools Programme

"Much of our education system militates against creativity; productivity and targets seen to be the overriding priorities. All the more important then that schools come to Arvon, for they will experience an oasis, a calm yet an intensity that will help each child find a writing voice… It should be part of every young person’s education.” - Award-winning children's author Sir Michael Morpurgo

Arvon is the UK’s leading creative writing charity. We produce residential, community-based and online writing courses tutored by professional writers, reaching over 7,000 people annually. Booker Prize-winner Bernardine Evaristo describes Arvon as "one of the most important literature development organisations in Britain."

Bringing the transformative power of creative writing to young people has been central to Arvon's mission since its inception in 1968. Our residential Schools Programme brings over 400 state school students a year from all over the country to our inspiring countryside writing houses. More recently, our digital offering, Arvon at Home, launched in 2020, has reached over 1,500 young people to date.

Arvon residentials allow young people to discover the joys of creative writing. Living together as a close-knit writing community, students take part in workshops with, and receive one-to-one feedback from, established authors. The weeks can be life-changing, inspiring a love of reading and writing, increasing confidence and wellbeing, and strengthening young people's social skills and friendships.

"The Arvon course gave me more confidence and helped me become a better writer. I feel like I have found myself at Arvon." - Student, aged 14,  2019/20

"Arvon has, without a doubt, changed their lives for the better.” - Teacher, 2019/20
