Project description

Arbroath Ski Club is looking to train more instructors to meet the growing demand for lessons at RM Condor, Arbroath, and in doing so secure the future of the Club. The Ski Academy project will also give trainees a chance to forge a career in the ski industry and develop many core skills.

Who are we?

Arbroath Ski Club was established 1987. We use the artificial ski slope at RM Condor in Arbroath. Our membership includes all levels of skier from beginners and improvers to race training. We believe in skiing for all and include classes for children aged 5+. We have no maximum age !

What we need

We need to train more instructors to secure the future of our community Club. This will also allow us to expand our community programme and introduce more people to our sport.

We have also identified a need to better engage with the 14-20 age group. The Ski Academy programme will do that by offering trainees the chance to gain an industry qualification and a future career doing something they already love. This is something our Committee are passionate about as many have been given these opportunities themselves.

We have recruited 20 trainee instructors aged 14+ who all have one thing in common – they want to become instructors for Arbroath Ski Club! With the support of the Club they will go on to take the British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI) Level 1 examination within the next 2 years.

What we do

Our membership is currently around 350 and comprises families and individuals who want to learn to ski or to develop their skiing. Our members are predominantly from the Tayside area but we don’t turn anyone away!

We offer tuition on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and our season runs from September to May each year. We are passionate about skiing and put considerable effort and time into our lesson structure and organisation to make sure our classes are fun whilst being instructive. However, our progress is being hampered by a lack of qualified instructors.

Academy Training

Our Trainees have varying levels of experience from beginner to more advance snowsport enthusiast. They will all go through a comprehensive training programme delivered by the Club’s instructors before taking their Level 1 examination. The training programme is thorough and, prior to the examination, all candidates will have their skiing skills assessed to ensure they meet the required standard. The Club has undertaken to meet the costs of the BASI examination and pre-assessment which is approximately £850 per candidate and we are looking to raise these funds through this crowd funding project.

The difference this will make

Skiing is very popular in our area because of our proximity to the Scottish ski centres and there is a huge demand for lessons at our club. Our goal is to secure the future of the Club by boosting the pool of volunteer instructors, whilst giving the Trainees the chance to develop essential life skills and gain an industry qualification which could lead to a future career.

Our Club already has so many dedicated members, let’s make our Ski Academy a huge success and give lots more people the chance to ski to success!
