We’re fighting Loneliness, will you help?
Appleby is a rural village in North Lincolnshire.
For some in our area social isolation and its impact on health and well being is very real. We have a proportionately large number of older residents and a growing number of children in our area. There is little for either age group to do. We have no pub, no shop, no post office and our bus service is minimal. Our nearest social opportunities lie about 5 miles away which, to some, may seem insignificant but to others is a barrier that is impossible to cross, particularly if you are young, an older person, a carer or are living with limited financial means. We are called the Appleby Home Front and we want to make a difference to the lives of those affected by social isolation.
We have formed a constitution and are actively seeking sponsorship/funding to host a 1940s village festival that will mean young and older people will come together to enjoy a day of fun, nostalgia and music and experience for a fleeting time what life was like during the 1940s.
We are hoping to pay for transport for vulnerable residents outside the village to come to the event and we'd really like to gather personal experiences of the war years into a written legacy for the community.
Profits from the event will go toward funding other activities for the community, we aspire to be self-sustaining following this ambitious project.
We have come a long way in the past few months since the idea of a community festival came to life. We have 4 artistes booked, re-enactors, vehicles of the era and a vintage market is on the cards. We're opening a 'pop up' tea-room, the Church is organising an exhibition of life during the austere 40s and we're planning a parade. We've even booked a BBMF flight over the village (weather permitting!) Now we need the finances to help make that idea happen.
Can you help? We are frantically seeking help from local businesses and groups but we need a little morale boost and would love you forever if you can help.
We will keep trying because we sure 'we can do this'.
It is with that 40s spirit of determination and enthusiasm that we will succeed. We hope you can help us but if you can't, "thank you" for reading.
