Please take a look at the accompanying video, of which below there is a partial transcript. For those who have watched, below there is more detailed information on the project and what i hope to achieve upon it's completion, as a few things fell out my head when I sat in front of my laptop on Primrose hill.
.....Thank you for being here. But why? You are here because I have always had a love for writing poetry. You’ve kept this quiet, I hear you shout, but not so. It’s 22 years since I had my first poem published. Aged just 10 I had a poem published in a book of works called 'The Cow Jumped Over The Moon', and that poem was called Sports. Sports was a satirical look at the way that big money interests have corrupted commercial sport at every level, at the ultimate expense of the grass roots. Here it is:
There are lots of sports all over the world
Hockey, Tennis, Basketball
But I like football best of all
Scream and shout
Scare the blooming neighbours out
As they sip their cups of tea
They’ll hear you shout “i’ve scored three”
That’s what I love footie
Now I know what you’re thinking, you’re thinking “three goals is a hat-trick you 10 year old fool”. You’d be right. But this willingness to second myself to the rhyme, to the poem, should be a sign of how much of myself I give to the poetry I write, and how much faith I have in this project I am asking you to be a part of.
More recently I have been writing more poetry, some which I have performed at spoken word evenings, which I can assure is just as satirical, just as imagery packed, and possibly even more current in themes than Sports.
My most recent poem is called One. One is a story of a persons journey of realisation as their untarnished dreams encounter one of the most pressing and affecting issues now accepted as endemic to cities the world over. It's one human's very public solitude against the backdrop of a changing landscape.
I want to tell this story through language, and I also want to tell it through animation, which is where the need for help comes in. I have found an animator, who furthers profound stories with beautiful and poignant imagery, and she has agreed to do a 3 minute animation for what is a gratefully received reduced fee. The animator has previously worked for Russell Brand on a number of projects. Knowing from his public work that he is passionate about the themes of One, I would try, and hope, to use that connection to engage him in generating exposure for the film. I will voice the poem myself.
Upon it's completion, I intend to submit it to festivals for animated shorts. I will also use it online to generate exposure for both my writing and voice work, and of course hope to use it to stir discourse on an issue that is picking at the fabric of our society and others globally.
I have spent some time considering what to give in return to anybody generous enough to donate, and tried to think of a number of different ideas to correlate with varying donation sizes. What I have decided to do however, is work with the themes in the story. For every person who donates, regardless of donation size, I will volunteer an hour near where I live in Camden, through one of a number of organisations, in the realm of housing and homelessness for vulnerable people. On top of that, everyone who donated will get an HD version of the finished product for themselves.
The money being raised will be spent entirely on the animation.
I haven't included any excerpts or passages from the poem, and that is due overwhelmingly to my desire to keep it all back until the film is completed. I left in the bit of the video where I struggled to stop recording as homage to the importance of embracing imperfection.
Thanks a lot for reading, and for your donations.
Lots of Love
