The General Election campaign has now begun!
Amelia Womack - Green Party Deputy Leader, campaigner for a Green New Deal, scientist and supporter of a People's Vote – has been selected as your Green Party MP candidate for Newport West.
Amelia has been Deputy Leader of the Green Party of England and Wales for five years, having been chosen by members three times. As the youngest person in a leadership role in any political party in the country she is has been at the forefront of a resurgence in interest in politics and the environment among young people. Now she’s standing to be Newport's first Green MP.
In the Newport West by-election earlier this year, Amelia tripled the Green's vote share and campaigned successfully for the Newport Bypass motorway project to be scrapped.
Amelia said: “I’m proud to have been chosen to fight again for Newport West. This is a chance for us to return our first Green MP in Wales to Parliament. This also is a building block for our campaign for the Welsh election where the Greens expect to make major breakthroughs.”
Amelia's priorities will be:
- Pushing for a People’s Vote and then campaigning hard for Remain
- Achieving a Green New Deal for Wales - meaning good quality jobs in sustainable industries, warm homes and major improvements to public transport
- Fighting tirelessly to reverse austerity.
We need to raise £1,000 to kick-start our campaign and hit the ground running. This will enable us to pay for leaflets and a free post to houses across the constituency.
While other political parties are funded by wealthy corporate donors, the Green Party is different. We’re a grassroots people-powered party, funded by thousands of people chipping in donations of £5, £10 and £50 to fund our work. So every donation will make a big difference to this campaign.
