Project Summary

Climate change is a symptom of something deeply amiss in our relationship with the earth as a whole and with each other. It is a failure to live from the insight that, ‘everything in the world is connected’ as Pope Francis writes in his encyclical Laudato Si. Addressing the emergency that we collectively face requires not simply technical solutions but a new vision able to inspire people to live differently. As Pope Francis also writes, ‘Saint Francis is the example par excellence of care for the vulnerable and of an integral ecology lived out joyfully and authentically. He is the patron saint of all who study and work in the area of ecology, and he is also much loved by non-Christians’.

This project engages with the vision of Laudato Si through the lens of the relationship between St Francis and St Clare, with whom Francis had a lifelong spiritual friendship. The aim is to bring to life the charism of Francis and Clare by situating their relationship in Wales today, invited there by two children looking for help in telling people about climate change.

The project takes the form of a one-hour performance created and performed by Claire Henderson Davis and Fraser Paterson, with a script written by the poet and theologian Malcolm Guite and an original soundtrack by composer Gary Lloyd. CAFOD will offer follow-up workshops on climate change with the aim of sowing seeds of transformation in every community visited. The piece will be designed for a flexible performance space making it available to a wide range of settings – schools, churches and community spaces of all kinds. The performance will be toured by Claire and Fraser for at least one year throughout the UK and possibly abroad (01/2020-12/2020) with the option of training another cast to take over should demand support it.

The project is hosted by the Society of St Francis, European Province, (Registered Charity No. 1064356.) The Society will receive and administer all project funding.
