New stretch target

Thank you!

Its fantastic news that we've reached our first target in just over two weeks.  Although it now states we are 'overfunding' the truth is that we need to raise as much money as we can so that we can film as many interviews as possible and create a half hour documentary. With extra funding we will be able to undertake more research into finding and filming surviving islanders, prisoners from the island camps and even German soldiers who occupied the island.  We will be able to dedicate more time in the edit to produce a polished documentary which we can take to broadcasters to help show the film to as wide an audience as possible.  Please don't stop supporting us, we still need your help.  And we want to hear from anyone who was evacuated and would like to tell us their story.

With very best wishes

Charlie Gauvain

Project aim

To make a documentary about the evacuation of the Channel Island of Alderney during WWII and what the homecoming was like for the residents 5 long years later.

About the project

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the evacuation and German occupation of the Channel Island of Alderney and 70 years from its liberation. Much has been made of what happened in Jersey and Guernsey during WWII, but few know the story of Alderney. Not only did all 1,400 islanders have to evacuate with 12 hours' notice and carrying just one suitcase - leaving money in the tills of shops, but the island, with few witnesses, was to become the only place on British soil with a concentration camp, Lager Sylt, as well as three other labour camps. In total there were over 4,000 forced labourers on the island, with over 3,200 German soldiers. During the 4 years of war the island was transformed into Festung Alderney with five Coastal Artillery Batteries, 22 Anti-Aircraft Batteries, 13 Strongpoints, 12 Resistance Nests, three Defence Lines and 30,000 Landmines, the most fortified island in the World yet - no battle was ever fought. The island is planning its own commemoration of what happened, including restaging some of the evacuation using school children and inviting former prisoners to return in June. It could be the last opportunity for the surviving islanders and prisoners to tell their stories.
