I first met Tirtha while working in Nepal for Student's Partnership Worldwide (SPW), back in 1998-99. We were working on grass roots projects, in villages in rural Nepal. Each European working for SPW was partnered with a Nepali, which not only helped develop language skills, but also created long lasting friendships. Since then, I have remained in contact with Tirtha, learning about his work, and projects in Nepal. He has run a number of successful projects in rural communities, both providing clean drinking water, as well as providing training and empowerment for women farmers. He has proven himself a reliable and good project manager. Tirtha needs to raise money to set up and run his projects, but as he is a Nepali citizen he can't use Crowdfunder directly, as he needs a UK bank account. This is why I have set up this funding page, on his behalf; in the knowledge that any money raised will go direct to the project, with no money being swallowed up by administration costs!
This project has been set up, by Tirtha Poudel, to fund an agriculture library, to provide a resource where women farmers and male farmers can learn about agricultural skills. The library will be a resource which provides information on farming systems, crop rotations and information on the selection of animals for breeding, to improve blood lines. The project aim is that this information will enhance farming knowledge and skills, enabling each family to farm more efficiently. The agricultural library will be set up so that women will feel welcome and be able to feel comfortable and empowered to freely visit. It will also act as a social hub, so that farmers, especially women, can meet and share their experiences. It is therefore hoped that the library will also serve as a resource to increase quality of life.
The aim of the fund raising is to collect enough money to enable the funding of this project, from building the foundations, to the purchase of the books and, if possible, the installation of two computers, to allow internet access. The costs are anticipated to be as follows:
- Low cost library building with 2 rooms: 2800 GBP - Bricks, iron rods, cement, roofing materials doors and window.
- Furniture for the learning centre: 800 GBP - Chairs and tables for ten people, plus other furniture for breakout and socializing.
- Books shelves, books and other library equipment 1100 GBP - agriculture related books in Nepali and local languages, easy to read.
- Two internet accessible computers, plus an LCD and display board 900 GBP - for use when teaching.
The cost for library setup is estimated at a total £5600 GBP.
