AGHAST stands for ACTION on GASWORKS HOUSING AFFORDABILITY SAFETY and TRANSPARENCY.
We are a group of residents in East Brighton who are concerned about the plans for developing the gasworks site as proposed by the St William Berkley Group. We believe St William is putting the needs, health and wellbeing of our community at risk and while we welcome the redevelopment of the site we have grave concerns about the aggressive nature of the current proposal
Southall residents in London are bringing a legal case against Berkeley Group related to the redevelopment of a gasworks site they claim is making local residents sick. Residents also complain of a pervasive petrol smell that significantly affects their home life and local businesses too.
The council will undertake their own environmental site investigations however these will be funded by St William.
AGHAST wants to commission an independent expert who will work with us to research the most effective ways to challenge Berkeley’s plans for the site so as to protect our community from potential environmental contaminants and stand up for our wellbeing and concerns about the current plans which include hyper density, massing and unaffordability. We are up against developers with big pockets and a worrying track record in developing gasworks sites.
The money will be spent on commissioning the best value planning consultancy we can find to undertake specialist research into every legal aspect of the development – to ensure our interests as a community are fully and effectively expressed within a planning process that can be stacked against communities.
Over the coming weeks we will be updating this page with info on the company we choose and their approach plus a detailed costing which accounts for your contributions.
This will cost a significant amount of money but we believe the health and wellbeing of our community is worth every penny. We need your help to do this by giving generously to our campaign and also asking others to do the same.
